Moillard Bourgogne Chardonnay, R349.99, Woolworths
The French have never really understood why chardonnay needs to be smothered in oak, and this is a reminder that they might be on to something. The grapes come mainly from the Mâconnais, in the sunnier south of Burgundy, where vines that are between 15 and 40 years old produce beautifully ripe, generous fruit.
Why we love it:
It’s all fresh fruit, crisp minerality and quiet elegance. No tricks, just very good chardonnay from the region that more or less invented the style. Pair it with seared scallops or grilled white fish, roast chicken or pork, or anything involving a good creamy sauce. A soft goat’s cheese, Camembert or Brie will do very nicely too.
