Château de Fesles Vin de Loire Chenin Sec, R279.99, Woolworths
South Africans tend to think we’ve got chenin all sewn up, and let’s face it, our homegrown offerings are top class. But the Loire Valley would like a word on the topic, we’re sure. Chenin originated there and has been grown in the region since the ninth century, so it’s fair to say the French know a thing or two about it too.
Why we love it:
This French classic layers stone fruit, citrus and delicate florals over a creamy palate, all lifted by bright, racy acidity. Fresh, elegant and a timely reminder of where chenin first found its feet. Pour it with a lemony herb-roasted chicken, lobster or scallops, or a savoury tart piled with caramelised onions and crumbly aged goat’s cheese.
