FAT bastard Chardonnay, R780 for six, from the producer’s online shop
FAT bastard has never been a brand that takes itself too seriously. It champions a straightforward idea: great wine should be enjoyed, not overcomplicated. In a category where people can get frettingly earnest about what’s in their glass, that’s a philosophy we can totally get behind.
Of course, its unapologetic name has always been the first sign that there’s room for irreverence. The label aims for expressive, approachable wine with plenty of personality and not an ounce of pretension. Its chardonnay fits the brief nicely. It’s generous and full of flavour, and makes an impression without demanding that you know your malolactic fermentation from your elbow.
Why we love it:
Ripe tropical fruit, rich buttery notes and soft vanilla make this a white for those of us who like our chardonnay with a bit of oomph. We’d pour it alongside grilled fish or roast chicken, preferably with crisp potatoes, a big green salad and friends who have no plans to hurry off to.
It’s equally at home at a dinner party or with an ordinary Tuesday supper that deserves a wee upgrade. A little indulgence, very little homework. Bliss!
