David Donde has done coffee. Very successfully, in fact. The serial entrepreneur is the man behind Cape Town’s famous Truth Coffee Roasting and co-founder of Origin Coffee Roasting. Now he’s turned his attention to bread with Flour Market, a bakery supplying some of the city’s top restaurants and cafés. When he’s not building businesses, he’s mountain biking (and occasionally crashing), cooking or listening to Eric Clapton. He tells us more.

What’s the best book you’ve read in the last year and why?

Simon Sinek’s The Infinite Game, as purpose matters.

How do you keep fit?

Mountain biking, except when I crash. Then I heal up until I’m fit enough to go mountain biking again.

What’s your go-to restaurant for a low-key weeknight meal?

Chapmans Peak Hotel for the calamari and steak.

What artwork will you always love and why?

Hm, too many. But anything by Roy Lichtenstein.

Do you have a hobby? What is it?

Wow, too many to mention, from cooking to mountain biking and adventure motorcycling to fly fishing …

What’s the one unusual item you can’t live without?

My chef’s knife.

Who was your high school celeb crush?

Grace Jones.

Three songs you’d take to a desert island?

Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant (and the rest of the album), Monty Alexander’s Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Eric Clapton’s Rambling On My Mind, live in Tokyo. Not just for the music, but for what they did at various stages of my journey and the memories.
