Nathi Simelane knows a thing or three about making art happen. Originally from Mpumalanga, he’s now the managing director of Joburg’s iconic Artist Proof Studio, where he helps artists develop their talents and brings ambitious creative projects to life. A University of Johannesburg graduate, he previously managed special projects at the studio, working with both emerging and established artists. Away from work, he’s happiest on a mountain bike, tending to his plants or tucking into a bowl of noodles. Here’s what else makes him tick.
What’s the best book you’ve read in the past year, and why?
Hmmmm ... that would be The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins because I came across it at the right time in my life when I needed to prioritise myself and my growth. It gave me more insight into distinguishing between what I can control and what I cannot. Having taken on a new leadership role, I can sometimes feel responsible for how people respond, whether they understand decisions, take ownership, or support organisational changes.
How do you keep fit?
I do a lot of mountain biking when I get a chance. I cycle at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at least three times a week after work, as it’s close to where I live. On some weekends, I take a drive to Cradle Moon Lake for some time out of the city. It has beautiful scenery, including wildlife.
Weeknight, low-key restaurant go-to?
PRON in Linden is a must-visit if you’re in the mood for noodles. Their beef broth is absolutely divine, and the food is such great value you can try many different meals and not break the bank.
What is the one artwork you’ll always love, and why?
I’ve always loved Themba Khumalo’s captivating landscapes, which deal with belonging, spirituality, connection and the experience of Joburg. The one that speaks to me is an etching titled Umkhanyisi. For me, it evokes more than a landscape but rather something that can guide, hold memory and offer refuge. I relate to it because my mother went through a spiritual journey and bodies of water are associated with cleansing, renewal and a connection to ancestors.
Do you have a hobby?
Yes, one that gives me a bit of time outside and brings some peace is gardening. I do it at my apartment and my mother’s house. I enjoy learning more about plants and the seasons they thrive in. My latest and favourite houseplant acquisition is the Green Velvet plant (Alocasia frydek), which I love for its vibrant electric green and velvety feel.
The one unusual item you can’t live without?
A fidget cube. Actually, I’ve got a couple of them. I like the different mechanisms and variety of tactile features for times when I get restless. I’ve got a pocket-size version and another I keep in the office.
Who was your high school celeb crush?
Lebo Mathosa.
Three songs you’d take to a desert island?
Dancing Machine by the Jackson 5, PRIDE. by Kendrick Lamar and Amasheleni by Kabelo.
