A good week for Chad Le Clos
Olympic swimmer Chad Le Clos, whose flat in Sea Point was one of those destroyed by fire two weeks ago, is using his foundation to help other victims of the blaze. Le Clos was competing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when the fire broke out. He said all the money collected for the fire fund would be paid to the victims. A 93-year-old man, Sam Strime, who lived in one of the flats, died from smoke inhalation while trying to rescue his dog.
A bad week for Solly Malatsi
Communications minister Solly Malatsi’s draft national AI policy, or the lack of one, came back to haunt him last week. The original draft included fictitious sources and had to be quickly withdrawn, without a replacement. This means South Africa, an upper-middle-income economy with the most developed technology sector on the continent, could not be included in the World Bank’s global map of economies that have a national AI strategy. Being on the map matters because AI strategies are treated as foundations for investment, regulation, skills development and international co-operation.
