Tshwane city manager Johann Mettler was reinstated following a Pretoria High Court order setting aside his suspension. The court found that council speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana exceeded his powers by disqualifying 13 councillors’ votes at a July 9 meeting, a decision that enabled the vote to suspend Mettler to pass. The DA and trade union Solidarity had brought the urgent application, arguing the process was unlawful. Mettler called the ruling a victory for the rule of law.

Lucky Montana has run out of rail. The former boss of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has had his homes in upmarket Joburg and Pretoria suburbs frozen, allowing him to live in the houses but preventing him from selling, renting or using them as loan collateral. They are legally his — for now. But if the Special Investigating Unit, which is probing alleged corruption involving Montana and the agency, wins a final forfeiture order, ownership would be transferred to the state.
